Activism is intended action for the purpose of social, political, economic and environmental change. Activists take sides on important issues such as war, human rights, workers rights, women’s rights, abortion, poverty and race issues. Protest and dissent are also forms of activism and sometimes guerrilla war but influence has been greatest for Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., and Che Guevara. Activists write letters to politicians, newspapers and lead economic boycotts. They lead rallies, street marches, hunger strikes work strikes and activists have helped the world develop it’s freedoms. There are religious activists and intellectuals as well as famous people who use their fame to help the world.
News media and mass media inform the world about change and form opinions and report world affairs. The Internet has revolutionized news media and publishing and many newspapers and magazines have shut down or extended to online editions. Journalism and activism both attempt to aid society and influence values and the situations of the world.
Elites and government have often controlled the Press and Journalists to maintain power. Democracy and the international community protect journalists but many die in war torn territories and for their careers. Journalists are watchdogs for governments and international and local organizations. Activists face arrests, deportations and executions in extreme cases as well as seizure of their property. Activists and journalists both serve the same noble purpose, which is to promote human life and human rights.
